The summer school on Migration and Refugee Studies is an intensive, three-week training that combines lectures, seminars, interactive class sessions and fieldwork. And the aim of this activity is twofold. The first one is purely academic, and is to enable students to develop a thorough and multidisciplinary understanding of the key legal, political, medical and communication aspects of existing regional migratory flows and patterns. From the global architecture of contemporary migration to emerging conceptual and policy challenges, legal frameworks and state practice, the role of public health in forced migration settings, the role of media, to the role of NGOs and host community solidarity in driving migration policies. Distinguished academics, researchers, and practitioners shed light on these issues, while the students had the opportunity to interact with local human rights organizations and discuss challenges and practices from the field.

The second aim is broader. In recent years, Greece became a critical frontline for over 1 million distressed migrants and a testing ground for Europe’s migration management policies. It thus provides an important location for studying both the theoretical and practical aspects of refugee studies and the challenges associated with managing contemporary forced migration. The summer school was held in three sites (Athens, Nafplio and the island of Lesvos) two of which play a very significant role in the management of distress migration in Greece and Europe as a whole. The idea is to bring together students from our universities and beyond, students from different disciplines and cultures to learn about these issues, motivate them to work on topics we all care about so much, practice, and move forward, not only ready, but inspiredto make a positive difference in the world.

Apart from being involved in the organization of this event, Professor Doussis gave a lecture on Climate Change and Forced Migration. Professor Panayiotis Tsakonas also gave a lecture on "The causes of migratory flows: Security concerns". Dr Angeliki Dimitriadi gave a lecture on "Asylum governance in the EU: From Dublin III to Dublin IV" and participated in the coordination of a panel.
