Associate Professor Emmanuella Doussis organised the 3rd Athens Summer School on Moving the EU forward from July 5th to July 11th. The Athens Summer School is an intensive interdisciplinary 7-day course (33 teaching hours) supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Commission (Jean Monnet Module). It provides comprehensive knowledge on the different aspects of the economic crisis and the key challenges that Europe faces in the post-crisis era.

This year, forty-five advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students from EU and non-EU countries participated and were actively involved in constructive discussions. The lectures were given by distinguished academics, researchers and practitioners with a thorough academic background and political perception on EU politics and policies. Loukas Tsoukalis introduced the main topic. Aristidis Hatzis and Filippa Charzistavrou explored the dilemmas of governance and the new challenges for the European institutions. Susannah Verney talked about Brexit and Euroscepticism. George Pagoulatos discussed the new opportunities for change in economic governance. Constantinos Filis and Emmanuella Doussis examined energy security issues, climate change and opportunities for sustainable development. Spyros Blavoukos and Ruby Gropas focused on the EU’s external relations and the governance of migration. Angelos Chrysogelos examined the rise of populism and, finally, Dimitris Sotiropoulos talked about the evolution of the European political culture, and the interplay between national and EU political challenges.
