Guest lecture "Dispute settlement in the Ancient World"

Associate Professor Emmanuella Doussis (Director of SEE Master's Programme) discussed with Harry Platanakis (Assistant Professor,  University of Athens) the Dispute settlement in the Ancient World. Through a survey of the ancient history of dispute settlements, we aimed to systematise the principles of arbitration within a system that lacks central organisation and the ethical principles that underly the interstate negotiations in the ancient world. Special attention was given to the Hellenistic era when the political autonomy of the Greek poleis (πόλεις) was preserved regardless of the presence of a superior power and the Roman era when the focus of settlement shifts towards something familiar to international law, revealing the ethical and legal sources of normativity that rules interstate arbitrations.
