
Course: Attempting Trasformation: the European Union and Southeastern Europe
Susannah Verney is Professor of European Integration and European Politics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Affiliate Researcher in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Glasgow. Susannah is a graduate of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London. Her PhD thesis (King’s College London) was about the Greek debate on European Community membership in the 1970s. Before joining the University of Athens in 2001, she was a Senior Investigator at the Office of the Greek Ombudsman. At the University of Athens, she has served as the Co-ordinator (2006-10) and Director (2022-2024) of the Master’s Degree in Southeast European Studies, and Athens Director of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree in South European Studies (EUROSUD) (2019-2024). She was the Editor of the journal South European Society and Politics and the related Routledge book series for 24 years (1999-2023, with Anna Bosco from 2008). She has also served on the Editorial Boards of the European Political Science Review, Journal of Balkan and Near Eastern Studies, Journal of Modern Greek Studies and Mediterranean Politics. Susannah was the Convenor of the Standing Group on Southern European Politics of the European Consortium of Political Research (2007-2022). Her ten edited or co-edited books include most recently Southern Europe in the Covid-19 Pandemic: The First Phase (2025) with Juan Rodriguez Teruel and Jose Real-Dato, Crisis Elections, New Contenders and Government Formation: Breaking the Mould in Southern Europe (2018) with Anna Bosco,and The AKP Since Gezi Park: Moving to Regime Change (2019) with Anna Bosco and Senem Aydin-Düzgıt. Her articles have appeared in journals including European Political Science, International Political Science Review, Journal of European Integration, Journal of Common Market Studies Annual Review, Environmental Politics, The International Spectator: Italian Journal of International Affairs, and West European Politics. Her main research interests concern the interface between European integration and domestic politics, including Euroscepticism and EU Enlargement.
