Athens is simultaneously a city with a rich historical past and a vibrant modern European capital. The city’s monuments and museums include the Acropolis and the New Acropolis Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, the National Gallery, the Benaki Museum, the Byzantine Museum, the Goulandris Museum of Cycladic and Ancient Greek Art, and many Byzantine churches. In addition, you can enjoy walking around the stone-paved narrow streets of the Plaka district, the pedestrian precinct at the foot of the Acropolis, with its wonderful view of the rock of the Acropolis and the Parthenon.
Modern Athens offers many possibilities for entertainment and cultural activities. During your stay, do not miss the opportunity to watch an ancient Greek drama at the Odeion of Herodes Atticus (Roman theatre) or a concert on Lycavittos Hill. There are also many modern theatres and concert venues with activities going on all the time.
You can relax in the coffee shops, restaurants and bars in the numerous squares in the city centre (Syntagma, Kolonaki, Psyrri, Thisseio) or you can visit the Northern suburbs, with their sumptuous 19th century villas and tree-lined streets, or Southern coastal suburbs, ideal for walks by the sea.
A short trip away by bus or Metro is the port of Piraeus, the starting point for boats leaving for the numerous Greek islands.
